Ada Prospero e Piero Gobetti traduttori dell’Orso di Čechov

Abstract

Ricostruire le traiettorie delle traduttrici e dei traduttori del primo Novecento può essere un compito arduo: la narrazione di una storia della traduzione a partire dalla microstoria, ossia dalle singole esperienze, è spesso ostacolata dalla mancanza di archivi che potrebbero aiutare a far luce sulla collaborazione con gli editori e con altri traduttori, e sull’approccio traduttivo. Nel caso di Ada Prospero Gobetti, tra le prime traduttrici italiane a volgere direttamente dal russo le opere di Andreev, Kuprin, Čechov, Tolstoj ecc., le cose invece sono in parte diverse. La critica tendeva a oscurare il suo nome anche quando compariva vicino a quello del marito sulla copertina o all’interno dei libri tradotti insieme, tuttavia le lettere e alcuni materiali conservati presso il Centro Studi Piero Gobetti aiutano a chiarire le dinamiche di questa traduzione collaborativa, e in particolare della versione italiana dello scherzo čechoviano Medved’ (L’orso).

Reconstructing the trajectories of translators from the early 20th century is often an arduous task: the frequent absence of archives that could help shed light on collaboration with publishers and other translators, as well as on translation approaches, does not facilitate the construction of a history of translation based on microhistory, that is, on individual experiences. This study addresses the case of Ada Prospero Gobetti, among the first Italian translators to translate directly from Russian the works of Andreev, Kuprin, Chekhov, and Tolstoy. Her name appeared next to Piero’s on the covers or inside books they translated together, but critics often obscured her name; however, the letters between her and young Piero, along with some materials preserved at the Centro Studi Piero Gobetti, are precious for better understanding the dynamics of collaboration between the two. Specifically, this study addresses the case of the Italian version of Chekhov’s comedy Medved’ (The Bear).
