Food insecurity in rich societies is an extremely urgent problem. The pandemic has brought attention to the inefficiencies of food systems, in which food insecurity and waste paradoxically coexist. This paradox is an expression of the need to frame food insecurity also in relation to the sustainability of food systems. While at the global level, the difficulty in reconciling both aspects is evident, some local initiatives show the interest and capacity of civil society to fill systemic gaps. One can find examples of spontaneous initiatives in communities around the world. These realities propose new ways of thinking about food, a sustainable and inclusive fight against food insecurity. This article explores the reality of ReFoodGees, an association born in Rome, in the Esquilino district, through qualitative research methods. The objective is to analyse the association and the relations it has established with the community over time. The aim is to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses, assessing whether it is possible to replicate the association’s example in other realities.
