Abstract

Economic research in China has faced complex challenges, especially in recent decades since the country's reopening to the world. While access to increasingly extensive data and an increase in experts have facilitated research, increasing economic and institutional complexity has made some areas of study more difficult, if not impossible. The main difficulties center on three key factors: data quality and availability, institutions, and people (human capital and relations).
