Should the study of Chinese foreign policy fall primarily within the domain of Area Studies, much of which adopt qualitative methods (process tracing, comparative analysis, historical reconstruction, documentary source study), or can it benefit from the use of sophisticated International Relations (IR) analysis techniques such as quantitative methods?
