Abstract

Food insecurity has become an increasingly important challenge in recent years, even in affluent societies in the Global North. The need to measure and understand how it manifests itself on the ground is critical to implementing policies and programs aimed at addressing it. This study aims to develop and test an Accessibility Index that can measure economic access to food-at the territorial level-by focusing on nutritional and environmental aspects. The index was applied at the national scale by identifying critical areas where access to healthy and sustainable food is most problematic. The spatial approach of this methodology enables the implementation of specific "place-based" policies to improve access to healthy, quality food. It is important to note the multidimensional nature of this phenomenon and the need to use an additional set of tools that can measure both economic access and physical and social accessibility to food. Further research, in fact, could focus on combining this indicator with methods that can identify the different dimensions that contribute to defining a situation of food (in)security.
