What Makes Metaphors 'Powerful'?

Abstract

In the past decades, the development of different theoretical frameworks has stimulated systematic empirical study on metaphors’ role in social, psychological, emotional phenomena, ascribing metaphors an unspecified, undetermined notion of ‘power’. The paper discusses the possible origins and implications of such notion, suggesting an alternative idea.

Nicola Zambon, Freie Universität Berlin

Researcher at the Freie Universität Berlin and Fellow of the Forschungsinstitut für Philosophie in Hannover. He graduated with a thesis on Hans Blumenberg, whose Nachlass he edits. He works mainly on phenomenology, philosophical anthropology and rhetoric.
