Abstract

This paper concerns Carlo Cecchi’s dramatic diptych Gl’Ingannati/La dodicesima notte (The Deceived/The Twelfth Night), performed in Siena on April 28th, 1991, at the Teatro dei Rinnovati, during the seven hundred and fiftieth anniversary’s celebrations of the local University. Although the double performance – whose memory has been concealed by the entire cast for over twenty-five years – seems to be a workshop (that combines amateurs and professional actors), it perfectly fits into Cecchi’s theatrical aesthetic, namely a conception of theatre as a “real play”. A play that, due to its peculiar amalgam between farcical features and tragic ones, shows here a grotesque essence.
