Abstract

Introduction: Respiratory system pathologies represent a condition that affects the lungs and all the other parts of the respiratory system. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome Covid 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a rehabilitation protocol already tested in the literature for patients with COPD, on patients affected by Post Corona Virus Syndrome, and to evaluate the organizational and clinical process indicators involved in patient care.

Methods: This research was conducted following an observational study carried out by the rehabilitation team of Poliambulatorio San Felice (ASL Rome 2), which is dedicated to respiratory rehabilitation. Ten assessment tools were used to analyze different aspects. The patients performed breathing exercises and aerobic training to get used to the effort. The outcomes evaluated in the study included the effectiveness of the rehabilitation protocol, the exacerbation after rehabilitation treatment at 12 months, the adherence to the functional assessment and rehabilitation treatment, and customer satisfaction.

Results: For this study, one hundred and ninety-six patients with breathing difficulties were recruited, of whom fifty five were affected by Long Covid Syndrome and one hundred and five were diagnosed with COPD, associated or not with Long Covid. Of these, thirty-six patients did not adhere to the rehabilitation treatment and were excluded from the sample. Statistical analysis did not show statistically significant differences between the groups; however according to the results of the health assessment questionnaire, a significant improvement was found in patients with Long Covid Syndrome.

Conclusion: From the results obtained, it is possible to state that the rehabilitation treatment, according to the World Health Organization guidelines, produced a statistically significant improvement for all patients included in the treatment programparticularly those affected by the syndrome.
