The unknown violence: elaboration and analysis of the phenomenon of violence against social educators.
Contenuto principale dell'articolo
Abstract
The various forms of violence that happen in the workplace and the subsequent lack of safety and protection of workers' protocols are matters that are widely debated and documented in articles on healthcare, with particular reference to healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and certified nursing assistants (CNA). However, the same matter is not given the same attention and importance when social workers are involved in high-risk exposure situations. Despite the heterogeneous nature of their activity – ranging from socio-educational to purely medical environments – institutional marginalization is quite normal. The tendency to consider exposure to danger a “natural” component of social jobs leads to overlooking the social worker’s safety. This lack of protection and the failure to recognize the responsibilities of the role not only fuel a sense of frustration in the social worker, but lead lots of professional to leave this field, thus depriving the healthcare and social system of essential competencies.
This study originated after the crime news of the murder of the psychiatrist Barbara Capovani, which highlighted the urgency to discuss the safety of the people that works in Healthcare.
The object of this research is the analysis of the different forms of violence (verbal, psychological, and physical) to which social workers are exposed and the subsequent lack of institutional and training support.
