Abstract

How can we come to terms with the legacy of Hans-Georg Gadamer? The essay analyzes the “history of effect” of Truth and Method, beginning with its relativistic and historicistic interpretations, showing how these can be considered biased receptions of Gadamer’s thought and how, also due to a partial ambiguity of Truth and Method, it may be legitimate to stress elements that suggest new interpretative trajectories. In particular, the essay proposes to understand the connection between being and language from the perspective of “truth”: from this standpoint, we can interpret prejudice not as an absolute determination of the possibilities of knowledge, but as a presupposition whose efficacy can be checked, also suggesting a return to the notion of truth as “adaequatio intellectus et rei”.
