The phenomenon of pluralism suggests rethinking the question of universality. Recent debates have shown that hermeneutics can make an important contribution to this task. However, hermeneutics has developed within the Western tradition, and needs to be rethought in order to make it adequate to the breadth of the confrontation between cultures. In order to contribute to this task, the author confronts some theories in the current debate and proposes to conceive of the universal as a formal dimension that does not necessarily have a centre but enters each time into relation with the concrete and particular element, and allows it to confront and recognise others.
