Faugues a Napoli, ovvero “la quadrangolazione delle fonti”

Abstract

Guillaume Faugues fu un compositore attivo tra gli anni ’60 e ’80 del XV secolo. Di lui ci sono pervenute solo 6 messe a 4 voci che, oltre a testimoniare una tecnica musicale di alto livello, addirittura anticipano importanti tecniche compositive che avrebbero trovato largo e generalizzato impiego nel secolo successivo. La sua maestria compositiva non sfuggì a Tinctoris che nel Liber de arte contrapuncti (1477) lo accostò ai massimi compositori del momento quale esponente dell’eccellenza compositiva degli ultimi 40 anni. Purtroppo la ricostruzione di un pur succinto profilo biografico del compositore è molto difficoltosa a fronte della estrema scarsità di documentazione a suo carico. Le poche registrazioni archivistiche in nostro possesso sono fortunatamente controbilanciate da attestazioni perlopiù desunte da trattati tardo-quattrocenteschi. La lettura di queste fonti, la loro contestualizzazione reciproca e una serie di rilievi intertestuali consentono di formulare, perlomeno a livello indiziario, un’ipotesi circa la biografia di questo importante maestro franco-fiammingo.

Faugues in Naples or the “Quadrangulations of the Sources”
The composer Guillaume Faugues flourished in the second half of the 15^th century (between the Sixties and the Eighties). Only six four-voice masses by him have survived that reveal a high compositional skill and anticipate important compositional devices in use in the following century. Faugues’s compositional skill was very appreciated by Johannes Tinctoris who, in the Prologue of the Liber de Arte Contrapuncti (1477), mentioned Faugues (together with other important musicians of that time) as one of the most representative composers of the last forty years.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to reconstruct his biographical profile as we have only few archival documents concerning him. Luckily, the documentary deficiency is compensated by some musical treatises from the late 15^th century that give us other very relevant information. These sources and their mutual contextualization – together with a web of intertextualities within Faugues’s masses – allow to formulate a hypothesis on the biography of this important French-Flemish composer.
