Although Ernst Bloch is remembered as the philosopher of utopia, his thought reveals a tension between the temporal structure of utopia and his theory of history. While utopia assumes a linear conception of historical time, Bloch develops a more complex idea of temporality, synthesized in the notion of multiversum. This raises the question: are utopia and temporal plurality irreconcilable or can they be articulated together? After demonstrating that Blochian utopia relies on the primacy of diachronic succession, this analysis explores forms of temporal plurality in his thought, particularly non-contemporaneity and the multiversum. Finally, the concept of work, inspired by the musical metaphor of the cantus firmus, shows that concrete utopia is not merely projection toward the future but organization of different historical temporalities.
