Abstract

The present article aims to deliver a queer reading of Gabriele D’Annuzio’s Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien (1911). By openly designating the saint as a subject of homoerotic desires and a languid and androgynous being interpreted by an androgynous dancer, D’Annunzio ends up questioning and subverting gender categories pertaining to the hegemonic order, creating a disruptive play based on gender ambiguity, the undermining of normative identities and orientations, and the will to arouse bewilderment as a result of these ambiguity and undermining. The article explores the queer charge of D’Annunzio’s drama focusing on its composition, representation, and text.

Francis Clemente, University of Oxford

Frances Clemente è dottoranda in Modern Languages (Italian) presso l’Università di Oxford, dove sta portando avanti un progetto finanziato dall’Open-Oxford-Cambridge AHRC DTP, dalla Baillie Gifford Scholarship e dal Clarendon Fund, volto a investigare la presenza del fenomeno estati- co nella cultura e letteratura italiane tra 1861 e 1914. Laureata triennale e magistrale in Lettere Moderne e Italianistica presso l’Università di Pisa, ha svolto periodi di studio e ricerca presso le Università Sorbonne (Paris-IV) e Warwick, e conseguito un Master in Modern Languages presso l’Uni- versità di Oxford. Ha partecipato a conferenze internazionali e pubblicato diversi articoli. Le sue aree di interesse includono: cultura e letteratura italiana dell’Otto e Novecento, letterature comparate, studi leopardiani, queer studies, cultura napoletana.
