Author Biography

Ann R. David, University of Roehampton, London

Ann R. David is Professor Emerita of Dance and Cultural Engagement at the University of Roehampton, London. Her research work focuses on dance anthropology and South Asian classical and popular dance, and on dance and ritual practices in UK Indian communities. This research includes issues of migration, identity and embodiment, and the gestural, narrative and ritual practices of bharatanatyam as well as dance in Bollywood, and the ritual dances of Tibetan Buddhist practice in Bhutan. She has been a Research Fellow on a major international project funded by the Ford Foundation, USA and held a Research Fellowship at SOAS, London. She has recently published the monograph Ram Gopal. Interweaving Histories of Indian Dance (2024), and co-edited (with Michael Huxley and Sarah Whatley) Dance Fields. Staking a Claim for Dance Studies in the Twenty-First Century (2020); and (with Linda E. Dankworth ) Dance Ethnography and Global Perspectives: Identity, Embodiment, and Culture (2013).
