The fall of the Roman Empire and, more generally, the end of classical civilization, became highly topical when the profound political, economic and social changes brought by World War I led some intellectuals and historians of deep learning like Spengler, Rostovtzeff and Toynbee, to meditate upon those far ages and to seek in them a paradigm for the present times.
