Abstract

This article aims shed light on the relationship between represented orality in film scripts and staged orality on screen, using the TV series Patria (2020), a filmic adaptation of the eponymous novel published in 2016, as a case study. With the aid of an electronic corpus that brings together the texts of the novel, the script, and the series' transcript, a qualitative analysis is conducted to highlight the main patterns of spontaneous speech construction that are mapped out more or less automatically or unconsciously in the performance. The results of the exploration reveal that the interpretation, no matter how closely it adheres to the reference text, aims for greater credibility from a discursive and emotional standpoint, making linguistic choices that feel relevant to the character in specific situations.
