Abstract

This paper examines Cicero's position on the nature of the signifier-referent relationship and, in this regard, refutes Gay's thesis: in the author's view, Cicero views this relationship in an anthropological rather than a linguistic light.
Furthermore, Cicero's behaviour is addressed in the context of certain linguistic debates of his time, such as analogy, etymology, the use of Hellenisms, archaicising formulae and the role of auctoritas.
