Abstract

In the current and unprecedented economic crisis, which affects with unusual cruelty mainly the European countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, it is urgent, with the help of Derrida’s deconstruction, to rethink the concept of oikonomia as the law of the house and of the “proper”. Discovering, in the folds of Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle the drive of the proper and of power, Derrida, unlike Freud, goes farther than an “economy of the possible” in order to mitigate the cruelest aspects of the death instinct that feeds the desire for power and mastery. Beyond this strategy, which nonetheless is necessary, deconstruction of oikonomia identifies in the event, as the incalculable, the im–possible non–power that, in an aYrmative way, names an inappropriable surplus, from which it is possible to think an an–economy of the gift, forgiveness, hospitality and of those other figures of unconditionality without sovereignty, which are, perhaps, the most “intractable” legacy of deconstruction.
