Abstract

This paper examines some of the issues underlying the notion of “appropriateness” in the context of health promotion evaluation. Appropriateness depends on an alignment of evaluation practices with the tenets of contemporary health promotion, including the notions of participation, community control, and respect for people not as unthinking objects of research but as partners in knowledge development. This means characterizing health promotion programmes as a process of social change rather than a “dose of treatment."
