(Modesty as Political Factor)

Abstract

As already in Plotinus, “life” means a structural unbalance between the body and the knowledge of it. There is something ungraspable in the body that should not be censored and/or destroyed. Moreover, that which unifies the body is a secret (an issue that classically has taken the form of the question of the relation between the body and the soul). In the various cultural orders, the sense of modesty functions, in various ways, as some sort of an indication, revealer, and even sentiment of such a “truth about oneself,” as it were.
