(Media and Violence: Why Do We Watch?)

Abstract

What do people do with violent media? Why do they seek and subject themselves to violent contents? What pleasures or gratifications do they get out of them? This essay provides a reflection on these questions on the grounds of a by now abundant psycho-sociological literature. The goal is that of showing the plurality of motivations, needs, uses, and gratifications both from a psychological and a social standpoint. It will thus emerge how many of such motivations have little to do with violence.
