Abstract

This paper addresses two issues. The first is a question regarding the relevance of Gorz’s diagnosis concerning the end of the work society. Can we still develop a critique of the current system of work on the basis of such a position? The second has to do with finding an alternative to the work society. Such an alternative could be the society of autonomy. The concept of autonomy must be purified of its paradoxes, particularly with respect to its being used instrumentally by contemporary capitalism with the goal of justifying the transformations of the social processes and their orientation toward a “regulative slavery.”
