The increasingly frequent appeal to the universality of human rights risks dissimulating a danger: the bearer of universal rights is void of any belonging and citizenship, is reduced as it were to what is basic, and thereby is exposed to violence. The paradox of those who have no country of belonging — the immigrants who disembark on the Italian coasts — is that of having to claim belonging to a qualified, differentiated, “political” identity that protects them from the metaphysical violence that may nestle in any form of universalism.
