Abstract

The ultimate expression of Hegel’s conception of synthesis can be found in his mature works on logic. This logic, however, has its concrete foundations in the reflections developed by Hegel starting with his early studies about the crisis of his own time. In order to understand the problems and the contrasts that characterize his age, Hegel develops the notion of “scission this notion entails a previous unity which divides itself, and points at a possibl e reconciliation. The notion of reconciliation, and therefore of synthesis, elaborated by Hegel in his later works includes within it the result of the process that led to it, and therefore the negative element that has been sublated. Scission is the unity of opposite determinations and shows at the same time the positive element born directly from this opposition.
