Orfeo, Ulisse e le Sirene: storia di una sconfitta di genere

Abstract

Da Omero a Kafka, le Sirene sono sempre servite come pretesto per trasmettere, attraverso metafore musicali, messaggi di natura moraleggiante. Semplici immagini dei pericoli del mare o di fenomeni acustici nel mondo antico, esse divennero nel medioevo misogino emblema della seduzione e della lussuria e con tale significato trasmigrarono nell’iconografia e nella letteratura tardorinascimentale e barocca, nel momento in cui l’allegoria si andava affermando come mezzo efficace di propaganda ideologica, prima che le arti del XIX secolo infondessero nuova linfa al mito colmandolo di mistero, ambiguità e poesia. Prendendo spunto da testimonianze visive antiche e moderne, il saggio propone una rilettura in chiave di sconfitta di genere dell’incontro di Ulisse con le Sirene, indagando – anche alla luce della moderna psicanalisi – il progressivo declassamento di queste ultime dal ruolo di carnefici a quello di vittime dell’indifferenza maschile.

Orpheus, Ulysses and the Sirens: Story of a Gender Defeat
From Homer to Kafka Sirens have been always exploited to launch, by means of music metaphors, messages full of moralizing content. Acting in the ancient world as symbols of sea dangers or as images of acoustic phenomena, in the misogynous Middle Ages they became emblems of seduction and licentiousness. Fraught with this meaning, they spread around in the iconography and in the literature of Late-Renaissance and Baroque: that is, in the artistic output of an age in which allegory was consolidating as a powerful device of ideologic propaganda, before 20-century arts injected new sap in their myth, filling it with mystery, ambiguity, and poetry. Starting from ancient and modern visual evidence, the essay offers a new reading of the episode of Ulysses and the Sirens, considered as a defeat of female gender. In the light of modern psychoanalysis, the author inquiries in the downgrading of Sirens from the role of slaughterer of men to that of victims of their indifference.
