A new open-access online database, EDF (Epigraphic Database Falsae), aims to collect and to make freely accessible to multiple users all known typologies of forged inscriptions made in Italy from the Middle Age up to now. It concerns copies of ancient inscriptions, intentional forgeries, modern transcriptions of literay textes or coins. EDF research project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research (MIUR) and it is entitled “False testimonianze. Copie, contraffazioni, manipolazioni e abusi del documento epigrafico antico”. This paper aims to provide a presentation of its potential, taking as an example the extraordinary collection of copies of Roman epigraphs housed in the Civic Museum of Catania.
