The article examines some letters written by Gregory of Nazianzus following his abdication at the Episcopal chair of Constantinople. These are mostly short texts written by Gregory to decline the invitation to the synod called for the summer of 382; in the letters in question, however, the practical purpose provides the pretext to Gregory to vent the disappointment and bitterness following the experience of Constantinople, they are therefore veined by an ill-concealed resentment towards the bishops. The harshness of the tones towards the highest representatives of the clergy echoes, albeit in an attenuated key, the look of certain Nazianzen iambic poems and thus allows us to identify a thematic continuity line between epistolary production and autobiographical poetry.
