The contributive system by symmories used in Athens in the Fourth century B.C. is the focus of a long debate, that wants to define its structure and functioning, on the basis of few documents existing about it. This article demonstrates the documentary value of Demosthenes’ oration On the symmories: explaining a reform plan to finance Athenian navy, it makes a technical and precise description of symmoric system. The detailed analysis of three passages of the discourse suggests that in Fourth century B.C. the trierarchy was financed by the contributive method of eisphora, taking an intermediate status between a liturgy and a tribute.
