The Athenian strategos Phormion is generally known only for naval victories in the Naupactus area in the early years of the Peloponnesian War; yet from the analysis of the sources we must believe that he was highly appreciated by the ancients and that his personal qualities, together with his ability as a military and naval commander who guaranteed important results to Athens in the 40s and 30s of the fifth century, were celebrated and recognized at the same level as those of other great strategoi of his time. In this paper I therefore intend to try to reconstruct the events in which he took part and evaluate his role within the Athenian political panorama.
