Abstract

The essay traces the historiographical and cultural significance of the ten-volume work directed by Nicola Tranfaglia and published between 1978 and 1983. Such work displayed highly innovative features in terms of both its reflection on the most urgent and relevant historiographical issues, language and dissemination to a wide audience, as well as in its ability to relate historical synthesis and historiographical reviews.
