The applicability of equal area partitions of the unit sphere
Keywords:
mathematics, applicability, applications, sphere, partitions, approximationAbstract
Wigner has famously written about the ``unreasonable effectiveness'' of mathematics in the natural sciences. Practioners of applied mathematics usually take a more pragmatic approach, assessing and comparing different techniques before applying them to the problem at hand. This paper uses a construction to partition the unit sphere into regions of equal area, and its accompanying software, as a case study. The applicability of this construction and software is assessed by
examining the papers, dissertations and software that either cite the construction or use the software.
