This essay will tackle the much debated notion of “écart” or “deferral”. While the various implications of the term make up an endless list, I will concentrate on the space of non-identity, or distance and absence,as I think that Beckett’s writing relies on a balance between accepting deferral and fighting against separation, what I will here call marginal presence.
