Abstract

This paper analyses the quotations from the correspondence between Cicero and Brutus in Quintilian’s Institutio Oratoria. While the direct tradition preserves only a limited corpus, Quintilian’s treatise provides numerous additional fragments. The study first the distinguishing features of the ad Brutum quotations compared to other letter quotations found in the Institutio. It then considers how Quintilian’s approach to the epistolary sources shapes his selective use of Cicero’s correspondence. This paper shows that Quintilian’s interest for the letters ad Brutum is directly related to the paradigmatic function of Cicero and Brutus’ relationship in the author’s discourse.
