After a brief review of the historical-constitutional concept of “political representation,” this essay shows that, despite any rhetoric currently dominating in Italy, political parties remain the unavoidable instrument for the realization of the political mediation of pluralism and of the conflicting aspects inherent in any social coexistence. This political mediation occurs through the exercise of representation, that is, through the elaboration of ideal models of community life that are offered as general projects to be realized concretely through an external orientation of the elective organs.
