The contribution focuses on the figure of the Turin doctor Angelo Mosso, in particular on the importance he attributed to physical education and popular outdoor games, both in school and in society. The model was the sporting activity practiced in English colleges, which he had known during his travels. To support free play as a physical and sporting activity, but above all to raise public awareness on the subject, on April 12, 1896 he wrote to a journalist of the “Corriere della Sera” asking him to publish an article on the subject: the letter, found by chance on the market book, expresses in a few lines the thought of Mosso, who is not inclined to share the idea of physical activi-ty understood as gymnastics practiced with tools.
