L'etnonimo Italiotes tra identità regionale e identità politica
alcune riflessioni sull'identificazione degli Italioti nelle fonti epigrafiche
Abstract
This article takes into account the hypothesis about the political meaning of the ethnic Italiotes attested in few inscriptions, in order to understand whether it is possible to interpret its use as an expression of belonging to the Italiote League. Along with the exam of literary sources, it has been carried out a comparison with other realities where a federal system existed and fostered a political identity. Since it has been also recognised that the city-ethic was preferred in order to identify individual Italiotes, my conclusion is that there is no need to think that the ethnic Italiotes expressed a form of political identity, especially as far as the epigraphic evidence is concerned.
