This paper offers some reflections on the nature and origin of dependent labor in the Persian
Empire. In Greek and Roman sources, mechanisms of the formation of servile labor emerge
from the warlike dynamics involving the Persian Empire and several Greek cities. The Persian
sources, especially the tablets from the archives of Persepolis, also highlight varied realities
of dependent workers from different regions of the Mediterranean and the Near East.
