Frammenti di ricordi: Giuliano l’Apostata e il suo ambiguo rapporto con Atene

Abstract

Giuliano l’Apostata nella sua vita soggiornò ad Atene per pochi mesi nel 355 d.C., frequentando
le scuole filosofiche neoplatoniche presenti nella città. Il presente saggio analizza
i pochi e frammentari ricordi che di quel soggiorno sono presenti nelle opere di
Giuliano, per giungere alla conclusione che esso non ebbe un’influenza profonda sul futuro
imperatore. Prendendo spunto da tale analisi, l’indagine approfondisce, inoltre, aspetti
del pensiero politico e filosofico di Giuliano, elaborati in particolare nella Epistola
agli Ateniesi e nella Lettera a Temistio.


In his lifetime, Julian the Apostate stayed in Athens for a few months in 355 AD, where
he attended the city's neo-Platonic philosophy schools. This essay analyses the few
fragmentary memories of that stay that are recorded in Julian's works, the conclusion being
that it did not have a profound influence on the future emperor. Taking inspiration
from this analysis, the study also focuses on Julian's political and philosophical thinking,
particularly developed in the Epistle to the Athenians and in the Letter to Themistius.
