The present work aims to prepare a list of the inscriptions that Polybius explicitly mentions throughout his Histories. The project will explore the variety of angles from which Polybius looks at the epigraphical evidence, and test in what ways he chooses to utilize these documents. Most importantly, it will attempt to compare the results of this first test with the theoretical observations and comments that Polybius himself presents in the course of his work, with regard to the good use that the historian should make of this type of documents. The idea that the historian must use documents, including epigraphical material, to write (or rewrite) a reliable and ‘scientifically’ correct historical narrative will be devoted special attention.
