Alcune considerazioni sui formulari di acquisto delle tombe nelle iscrizioni greche di Catania

Abstract

The paper aims to analyse an epigraphic textual typology, which is fairly frequent in imperial
and Christian Catania, that of funerary inscriptions with a formula for the acquisition
of the tomb. After discussing the vocabulary relating to the funerary monument and the
act of purchase as registered in the Greek inscriptions from Catania (with comparisons
with other epigraphic cultures), three different typologies of inscriptions are identified: the
first presents the substantive relating to the act of purchase, the second the verb and other
information relating to the purchaser and the deceased, the third refers to donations. Examples
are given for each of these typologies, in an attempt to offer new interpretations
and new readings and to outline a more precise picture of the life of the first Christian
communities in Sicily and their need to record in stone the act of purchase and the legitimate
ownership of the burial area.
