Abstract

In the second book of the Histories, Thucydides describes the climate of uncertainty
and suspicion that had arisen in the city at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War,
following the spread of the plague epidemic. Particularly, an oracle circulated concerning
λιμός (hunger) or λοιμός (plague). This paper discusses the possibility that
Homer and Hesiod could have been the sources for the creation of this oracle, suggesting
criticism towards Pericles and the war.
