About the Journal

Focus e scope

Historika is a new annual pubblication edited and created by the faculty members of the Ancient History program of the History Department at the University of Turin. Its goal is to present the results of the research on historical and historiographic “objects” or historika/historica. In the Greek and Roman world the linguistic and methodological identity of Historìa/Historia characterized these objects that still engender historical writing.

Historika uses the new editorial form of online open access, thus accepting the principles of the “Berlin’s declaration” (Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities) in the attempt to enhance the cultural and academic debate in the field of Ancient History in the age of the internet. Without renouncing the printed version, Historika publishes its articles in the International open libraries, the contributions are peer reviewed, the journal allows authors to retain all rights on his/her article (with the only obligation to cite the publication on Historika if the text is published somewhere else too) and permits an open and free access to the results of research publicily financed.

Articles pertaining to all aspects of Greek and Roman History from the archaic age to the Late-Antique can be published in Historika. Contributions in all national languages, eventually with an English translation, are accepted. Moreover, an additional thematic section that responds to the editors’ interests will appear along with a list of books that have been received with detailed reviews.

Another feature, namely the so-called e-print&preview already known in several disciplines, allows all authors authorized by their publishers, to make known online the results of their forthcoming work. Moreover, additional instruments permit readers to contact contributors and, eventually, to start a discussion on a public forum.

Historika tries to establish itself between tradition and innovation in the attempt to contribute to the modernization of the field.

Ethical Code

Historika is a peer-reviewed scientific journal and supports the ethical code of publications developed by COPE – Core practices, https://publicationethics.org/core-practices (accessed July 2020).

All parties involved - authors, management and editorial staff, referees - are required to accept the following ethical requirements.

Duties of management and editors

Historika's management and editorial staff are responsible for the decision whether or not to publish the proposed articles. To make this decision, they make use of the referee decision.

The articles proposed for publication are evaluated on the basis of their content without discrimination of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, citizenship, political orientation of the authors.

The editors and other staff members undertake not to disclose information on the articles proposed to other people in addition to the author, the referees and the editor.

All editors undertake not to use in their research the contents of an article proposed for publication without the written consent of the author.

Duties of referees

Peer-review is a procedure that helps management and editorial staff to make decisions on the proposed articles and also allows the author to improve his / her contribution.
The referee who does not feel adequate to the proposed task or who knows he cannot carry out the reading in the required time is required to communicate it promptly to the editorial staff.

Any text assigned for reading must be considered confidential. Therefore, these texts should not be discussed with other people.

Peer review must be conducted objectively. Any personal judgment on the author is inappropriate. Referees are required to adequately motivate their judgments.

The referees undertake to indicate precisely the bibliographical details of fundamental works that may have been neglected by the author. The referee must also report any similarities or overlaps of the text received in reading with other works known to him to the editorial staff.

Confidential information or indications obtained during the peer-review process must be considered confidential and cannot be used for personal purposes. Referees are required not to read articles for which there is a conflict of interest due to family relationships or previous collaborative or competitive relationships with the author.

Duties of the authors

If the editors deem it appropriate, the authors of the articles must make available the sources or data on which the research is based, so that they can be kept for a reasonable period of time after publication and possibly be made accessible.

The authors are required to declare that they have composed an original work in all its parts and that they have cited all the texts used.

The author cannot publish articles describing the same research in more than one magazine. Simultaneously proposing the same text to more than one magazine constitutes an ethically incorrect and unacceptable behavior.
The author must always provide the correct indication of the sources and contributions mentioned in the article.

The authorship of the proposed text must be correctly attributed and all those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, organization, implementation and re-elaboration of the research that is the basis of the article must be indicated as coauthors. If other people have participated significantly in some phases of the research, their contribution must be explicitly recognized.

In the case of multi-hand written contributions, the author who sends the text to the journal is required to correctly indicate the names of all the other co-authors, to obtain their approval of the final version of the article and their consent to publication.

For all authors there must be no conflicts of interest that could have influenced the results achieved or the interpretations proposed. The authors must also indicate any funding bodies for the research and / or project from which the article originates.

When an author identifies a relevant error or inaccuracy in one of his articles, he is required to promptly inform the editors of the magazine and provide them with all the information necessary to report the necessary corrections in the article notes in the online version.
