Sparta tra il 279 ed il 273 a.C.

Abstract

La storia spartana della prima età ellenistica costituisce un tema poco trattato dagli studiosi: le poche trattazioni a riguardo hanno mostrato piu’ volte, ed ingiustamente, il ruolo passivo di Sparta nelle vicende politiche internazionali del terzo secolo a.C. Tuttavia, nel periodo compreso tra 279 e 273 Sparta sembra politicamente partecipe delle vicende ellenistiche; la polis lacedemone segue una politica strategica anti-macedone astuta e mirata a consolidare la sua posizione nel Peloponneso. Sparta, nonostante la sua debolezza, occupa una posizione strategica nell’Argolide ed instaura rapporti con altre poleis localizzate al di fuori del Peloponneso.

The early Hellenistic history of Sparta constitutes a topic that has been overlooked by the scholarship: previous studies have often shown the passive role of Sparta on the international scene of the third century BC. However, throughout the period 279-273 the polis follows a strategic anti-Macedonian policy that aims to consolidate the Lacedaemonian presence in the Peloponnese. Despite its internal issues, Sparta occupies a strategic position in the Argolis and is able to establish contacts with poleis located outside the Peloponnese.
