 PHILOSOPHY AND THEATRE

Guest editor: Leonardo Mancini (University of Turin)

Philosophy and theatre have historically woven a mutual relationship of fertile and dynamic observations, at the heart of contemporary theoretical debate. Controversial issues of ongoing debate pertain the concept of representation, its meaning and its eventual collapse. Inquiries into text, staging, and the work of the actors, have prompted critical thinking about the theatre; in turn, this has stimulated new fields of analysis on philosophical issues, inspired by the constructs of fiction and embodiment that arise within the ritual of the drama.

With its dialectical tools, philosophy has developed theoretical reflections to read, interpret or even direct the developments and poetics of the theatre: from mimesis to identification, from gesture to the art of speech and to the art of the actor, examined through different cultures and epochs. In return, theatre has offered understandings that unmask the deep cultural fabric of society.

However, this reciprocity is now in crisis due to a progressive alienation of culture from life, and the progressive erosion of intermediation, for some of transcendence, offered by art. In this sense, it is increasingly necessary to bridge the gap that has widened in recent years between practice and theory, between places of research and contexts of artistic creation.

What is the strength of theatre today, in the contemporary social and technological context? Is its relationship with philosophy still relevant? What is the nature of this relationship? What results might a philosophical study of the theatre lead to?

In 2021, the journal “Filosofia” will focus on research inquiries on the relationship between philosophy and theatre. To this end, the Editorial Board will consider contributions that focus on the following thematic areas:

  • theatre and history of philosophy
  • philosophy as dialogue and theatre
  • the word and the language in theatre
  • theatre, philosophy and education
  • theatre as a metaphor for reading reality (divine, human, natural, political)
  • mysticism, esotericism and theatre
  • places and non-places of the theatre: the physical and the spiritual dimension of the scene
  • identity and alterity in theatre
  • the theatrical dialectics and the forms of contemporaneity.

“Filosofia” accepts submissions in Italian, English and French. The articles should comply with the following standards (Chicago Manual of Style, author-date)
