Dalla sacralità nazionale alla sacralità europea

La multiscalarità memoriale nei segnali di localizzazione territoriale dei fiumi sacri della prima guerra mondiale

Abstract

The Isonzo, the Tagliamento and the Piave are three rivers which played an important role in the events of the Italian front during World War I. For this reason, all three were declared “Sacred River of the Homeland”. This expression is one which now resonates in the collective imaginary, largely thanks to the road signs which are placed at the entrance of bridges spanning the rivers, at times directly beneath the name of the river itself.
In 2017, some municipalities in the area of the Isonzo replaced the well-known label with a more European phrasing, redefining the river as a “Sacred River of the European Peoples”. This initiative sparked a controversy which transformed the memory of the sacredness of these Italian rivers into a political battleground, and which even saw a number of the signs vandalized.
Through a systematic classification and analysis of all of the road signs placed along the course of the three rivers which directly refer to them, this article examines the multiscalarity of the different memorial labels, in order to understand if they are intrinsically doomed to be in competition with one another or if they can in fact coexist. This study also represents an opportunity for highlighting the underlying rationales and dynamics of the road sign as a highly specific medium, and its role in the transmission and reception of memorial messages.

Tre fiumi italiani – l'Isonzo, il Tagliamento e il Piave – hanno avuto un ruolo di primaria importanza nell'evolvere degli eventi sul fronte italo-austriaco della prima guerra mondiale e, per questo, sono stati dichiarati fiumi “sacri alla Patria”. Tale espressione è entrata nell'immaginario collettivo grazie anche ai segnali di localizzazione territoriale i quali, posti nei pressi dei ponti, a volte riportano la dicitura sotto il nome del fiume. Nel 2017, alcuni comuni isontini riformulano la celebre espressione in senso europeista, definendo l'Isonzo “fiume sacro ai popoli d'Europa”. L'iniziativa genera una tensione memoriale che, oltre a trasformare la memoria della sacralità dei fiumi in un terreno di scontro politico, sfocia in gesti iconoclastici nei confronti della cartellonistica. Attraverso una catalogazione sistematica e l'esame di tutti i segnali di localizzazione territoriale presenti lungo i tre fiumi, il presente articolo propone un'analisi della multiscalarità di referenze memoriali, al fine di capire se queste siano sempre per loro natura destinate a entrare in concorrenza o se possano, al contrario, coesistere. Questo studio rappresenta anche un'occasione per mettere in luce le logiche e le dinamiche proprie a un medium così particolare, in termini di trasmissione e ricezione del messaggio memoriale.
