"Humanitarian corridors": a political and ecumenical adventure

Abstract

This essay reconstructs the history of "humanitarian corridors," a successful migration management practice launched over ten years ago thanks to the collaboration of various religious entities engaged in an ecumenical effort: the Community of Sant'Egidio, the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy, and the Waldensian Church. With mixed results, this model of migration policy governance has also been replicated in other European countries. Supported by governments of varying political persuasions, "humanitarian corridors" confirm a sustainable and functional model of the right to asylum.
