Para quien decide emprender una experiencia migratoria, la organización del equipaje es uno de los momentos tópicos, quizá el primero en el que se toma conciencia de la condición de migrante. Maletas, baúles, fardos, paquetes atados con cuerdas, envolturas de cartón, bolsas; y luego colchones, almohadas y mantas; sillas plegables, cestas de bocadillos, limones y anchoas comprados directamente en el puerto: existe una vasta bibliografía escrita y visual que nos recuerda las características del equipaje material de los migrantes italianos a punto de embarcar rumbo a las Américas. Entre todos, el baúl es una tipología de equipaje más común a la oleada migratoria posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando el miedo a una nueva guerra determinó sobre todo el desplazamiento de familias pertenecientes a las clases de la pequeña y media burguesía Mediante fuentes literarias, entrevistas y correspondencia, en esta contribución se analizarán las funciones, simbologías y metáforas del baúl, que se convierte en el ‘relato’ de un recorrido migratorio, es su actor y testigo, sobrevive a sus dueños e impide que caiga en el olvido el contexto sociohistórico y humano en el que fue utilizado y cumplió su función de ‘contenedor en movimiento’.

Abstract

For those who decide to embark on a migratory experience, the organisation of luggage is one of the topical moments, perhaps the first in which one becomes aware of one's condition as a migrant. Suitcases, trunks, bundles, packages tied with string, cartons, bags; and then mattresses, pillows and blankets; folding chairs, baskets of sandwiches, lemons and anchovies bought directly at the port: there is a vast written and visual bibliography that reminds us of the characteristics of the material baggage of Italian migrants about to embark on ships bound for the Americas. Of all of them, the trunk is a type of baggage most common in the migratory wave to Argentina following the Second World War, when the fear of a further war determined above all the displacement of families belonging to the small and middle classes. Through literary sources, interviews and correspondences in this contribution the functions, symbologies and metaphors of the trunk will be analysed, which becomes the 'narration' of a migratory path, it is its actor and witness, it survives its owners and prevents the historical-social and human context, during which it was used and carried out its function of 'moving container', from falling into oblivion.
