Resumen

Jorge de Sena is widely recognized as a central figure in the 20th-century reception of Camões’s work, but the distinctiveness of his contribution lies in its dual nature — both critical and creative. This article aims to highlight the decisive impact of two key texts published in the 1960s: the poem Camões dirige-se aos seus contemporâneos (1963) and the short story Super Flumina Babylonis (1966). Through a combined analysis of these works and Sena’s correspondence with members of his intellectual circle, the article shows how these writings marked a turning point in the interpretation and reimagining of Camões’s figure. Building on this foundation, it explores how Sena’s proposal served as a catalyst in the literary reflections of some of the most significant voices of late 20th-century Portuguese literature — from Eugénio de Andrade to Sophia de Mello Breyner, from David Mourão-Ferreira to José Saramago.
