Toward a Non-Minimalist Conception of Aesthetic Experience

  • Jerrold Levinson University of Maryland

Abstract

What is aesthetic experience? The traditional answer relies on the idea of a mental state preceding experience, or an aesthetic attitude, usually apt to exclude other approaches such as the practical, or desiring ones. As an alternative, aesthetic attitude may be seen as openness towards the perceptive qualities of an object in which perception is not dominated by any further aim.
